Over the last two weeks, we have been introducing you to the various other types of massage that we offer alongside sports massage. You can read about pregnancy massage here and reflexology here. Today, massage therapists Giuliana Newman and Vicky Baars look at the final specialist massage we offer here at The Forge Clinic.

If you suffer from a sluggish immune system or fluid retention, manual lymphatic drainage massage stimulates the lymphatic vessels to ease the circulation of lymph fluid around the body .The lymphatic system is a separate circulatory system which normally relies on body movement for its flow. It is made up of the cells which deal with defence in the body and it carries waste products to be eliminated by the liver. It is very different from massage as it consists of very light rhythmical semi-circular movements on the skin directed toward the relevant lymph node. This treatment is not suitable in the first 3 months of pregnancy or if you suffer from acute infections, malignant tumours, serious heart problems or thrombosis. This treatment can be preventative or remedial and has numerous benefits:

  • It is deeply relaxing
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Relieves fluid congestion such a swollen ankles or legs or puffiness
  • It can assist with conditions such as lymphoedema which often occurs after cancer treatment)
  • Can improve conditions such as sinusitis , rheumatoid arthritis and skin conditions
  • Can be used to speed up healing after general operations or cosmetic surgery

It is a treatment which lasts one hour and works on all the lymph nodes in the body including several in the face and neck area.It is usually beneficial to have more than one treatment to see results.
