Chiropractic is a type of complementary medicine, which specialises in relieving and preventing problems of the spine and musculoskeletal system with the intention of restoring and improving health.
Chiropractors use a range of techniques to reduce pain, improve function and increase mobility, including hands-on manipulation of the spine. Chiropractors believe if the vertebrae are misaligned, then this can lead to disease and dysfunction in the body.
Chiropractic treatment is a safe, natural approach to treating back pain and many other health conditions.
Chiropractic treatment can help with:
- Joint pain, including hip and knee pain
- Muscle spasm and cramps
- General aches and pains
- Back pain including lower back pain
- Frozen Shoulder, Tennis Elbow and elbow pain
- Check-ups for your family as they grow
- Neck pain, including headaches arising from neck pain
- Pain from osteoarthritis and other degeneration.
Origins of Chiropractic
Many healers in history have understood the relationship between health and the spine. Hippocrates advised: “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases.” The profession of Chiropractic dates back to 1895, when DD Palmer performed the first Chiropractic adjustment in the United States in 1895. While spinal manipulation has been used for centuries, DD Palmer was the first person to develop a philosophical and scientific rationale to explain its effects. The word ‘Chiropractic’ comes from the Greek words chiros and praktikos meaning “Done by Hand’.
What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a holistic approach to health that aims to assist the body’s innate ability to heal itself, by treating the underlying causes of the problem. Back, neck, muscle and joint pain can have many causes, including poor posture, joint degeneration, overuse, weight gain, stress and tension.
“Chiropractic can help to bring the body back into balance by aligning the skeletal system, freeing up potentially irritated nerves, and releasing unnecessary pressure on the intervertebral discs. Think of the discs as sponges full of water. If you compress a sponge for an extended period, the fluid in the sponge is squeezed out and the sponge can become dry and brittle. Through the manipulation of the skeletal system and muscles, the aim is to free up this tension,” explains Jean Luc Lafitte, Chiropractor at The Forge Clinic.
Why is spinal health important
A healthy spine is vital because it provides support for your whole body, protects your nerves, helps you to move in different ways and contributes to your overall wellbeing.
The spine protects the central nervous system, which controls every cell in your body. So, when the spine is out of alignment, the central nervous system can be negatively impacted as well. This is why chiropractors focus on proper alignment of the spine to reduce pain and restore the central nervous system’s functions. For more information on spine facts click here>
What causes back pain and spinal problems?
People experience back pain and problems for all sorts of reasons, including:
- Posture: Poor posture or incorrectly carrying or lifting things over time causes stress and strain on the back.
- Degeneration: deterioration due to wear and tear, inflammation and trauma can lead to stiffness and other problems.
- Overuse: or repetitive movements- also twisting, over-stretching.
- Work and lifestyle: Sitting or standing for long periods can cause back pain.
- Stress: worry and anxiety can cause tension in the back muscles.
Sometimes there is no obvious reason why back pain develops. Seeing a qualified health professional, such as a chiropractor, who is experienced in diagnosing conditions of the back and spine, can help treat back pain, and also identify if a referral or further investigations are needed.
How spinal problems can be corrected
Chiropractors are trained to find the source of the problem and work with you to correct it.
Chiropractic treatment aims to improve the mobility of the spine, free stiff or restricted joints and relax the surrounding muscles. To do this, our Chiropractor Jean Luc Lafitte will manipulate vertebrae in the back which, when misaligned, can lead to other complaints.
First of all, Jean Luc will perform an assessment to ascertain the nature and location of the cause. He will also look at your hands, fingernails, and tongue to see if your condition can be improved with nutritional changes.
Jean Luc will tailor the treatment to meet your specific individual needs, using his hands and special instruments. The session begins with soft tissue work to release the muscles connected to the spine; and this allows for more effective spinal manipulation.
The clicking sound associated with Chiropractic manipulation is called an HVT adjustment. This sound does not actually come from the bones – a common misconception – but is actually the compressed body gases being released from between the vertebrae. This pressure on the nerves is what causes the pain.
This treatment alone can be highly effective in managing pain, however Jean Luc will also recommend exercises, nutrition and lifestyle changes to help your recovery and prevent recurrence of problems and pain. For more guidance on nutrition and diet click here>
